HK 149          Recreational Sports                                              Fall Semester

 

CREDIT: 1 SEMESTER HOUR

 

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

 

Instruction in fundamental rules, skills and strategy of recreational type sports: pickleball, table tennis, billiards, shuffleboard, horseshoes, floor tennis, and paddle tennis.

 

PREREQUISITE:     None               TEXTBOOK:            None required

 

 

NATURE OF COURSE CONTENT

 

The course is designed to allow students to learn a variety of recreational sports that may be taught as part of a secondary school physical education curriculum.  Techniques, rules and playing strategies will be covered.

 

 

GOALS/OUTCOMES

 

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

 

1.             Demonstrate a working knowledge of history, safety, rules of play and game tactics in pickleball, billiards, table tennis, disc golf, bocce, horseshoes, foot bag, shuffleboard, badminton, and orienteering.

2.             Know how to present the basic skills involved in these sports in a structured learning experience (HK Teacher Ed. Majors).

 

 

REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE

 

1.                  Students are expected to attend and actively participate in all class sessions. This is a laboratory class and quality of activity is assessed daily.

2.                  In case of illness or other excused absence, the student is held responsible for all missed work.   

3.                  Students must wear clothing appropriate for activity and athletic shoes.

4.                  CELL PHONES AND PAGERS MUST BE TURNED OFF OR SILENCED PRIOR TO CLASS.

5.                  Quizzes will be given on rules, history, and tactics of each sport.

6.                  Peer teaching in one sport (HK majors only).

7.                  Students will compile a portfolio with rules and history of the recreational sports learned in class.

8.                  Students will have an opportunity to earn extra points through participation in Intramurals.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION:

 

Technology will be used by the student to complete assignments, improve delivery of instruction (HK Majors) through the preparation of visual aids, and/or other instructional materials and to analyze performance.

 

 

FROM THE REGISTRAR:

 

Students who are not properly registered for the course will not receive credit for the course.  It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that his/her registration is complete and that his/her name appears on the class roll.

 

Students who register for audit must attend at least 70% of the class meetings. Failure to meet the attendance requirement will be recorded on the transcript by NA.
