HK 129 BEGINNING FENCING

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Instruction in techniques, footwork, and bouting; and experience in officiating bouts.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The beginning fencing course is designed for students with little or no experience in the sport. The course covers safety and conditioning, along with the fundamental techniques, footwork, and bouting. Strategy and rules are explored, and the course will conclude with an inter-class tournament.
GOAL: The purpose of the Beginning Fencing course is to introduce and develop skills fundamental to the sport of fencing. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of safety on the strip and rules of fencing. Each student will be able to use a variety of skills and tactics in a bout.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
A. To master the following skills:
1. grip, salute, on-guard position
2. footwork- advance, retreat, lunge, and recover
3. engagement and lines
4. preparatory action - feint, beat, press, glide, derobement
5. attacks - straight thrust, disengage, cut over, compound,
riposte
6. defense - parries (direct, circular, semi-circular)
B. To demonstrate a working knowledge of conditioning, safety,
rules of bouting and strategy.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
A. 27 hours of instruction.
B. Skill tests at mid-semester and end of semester
C. Written test at end of semester
D. Complete reading assignments
TOPICS:
Conditioning, equipment, grip, footwork
Safety, lines of engagement, simple attacks and parries
Rules, review all skills, preparatory actions, compound attacks
Review and begin informal bouting
Continue informal bouting
mid-term testing
Bouting, begin introducing more advanced techniques (optional)

GRADING POLICY:
Students may earn up to:
4 points per day for class participation.
100 points on the written test.
100 points in the class tournament.
Total possible points: 300
GRADING SCALE:
270-300 = A
240-270 = B
210-240 = C
180-210 = D
below 180 = F
FROM THE REGISTRAR:
Students who are not properly registered for the course will not receive credit for the course. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that his/her registration is complete and that his/her name appears on the class roll.
Students who register for audit must attend at least 70% of the class meetings. Failure to meet the attendance requirement will be recorded on the transcript by NA.
Students are expected to attend all classes. In case of illness
or other excused absence, the student is held responsible for all missed
work.
