Federal Loan Process
(Parents)
Parent loans can only be processed after the student
has applied for and has been awarded the
maximum student loan for which he or she is
eligible.
Step 1.
Parents and students must complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid on the
Web at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Step 2.
Once the FAFSA is processed, a Student Aid
Report (SAR) will be sent directly to your
student for you and your student to verify
the information you reported.
Step 3.
MUW will notify your student with an award
letter indicating the expected types of
awards and amounts. The student should
return the award letter to notify the
Financial Aid Center which lender they would
like to use and how much to borrow.
Financial need is determined by evaluating
the family’s ability to pay for educational
costs and to determine eligibility for
interest benefits.
Step 4.
Parents can apply for a Parent Loan for
Undergraduate Students (PLUS).
PLUS Loan Application If the parent is turned
down for credit reasons, the student could
be eligible for an additional Unsubsidized
Federal Stafford Loan.
Step 5.
If approved, parents must complete the
Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students
Master Promissory Note and submit it to
their preferred lender to complete the PLUS
Loan application process.
All proceeds of the PLUS loan will apply
to a students account. Any overages will
result in a refund check. Such refunds are
payable to the student, not the parent.
