What is Financial Aid and How to Apply?

Step 1: Submit - Applications

A.  Entering students must complete the MUW Admissions Application before eligibility for student financial aid awards can be determined. An eligible major or program of study must also be selected for aid eligibility to be determined.

B.  Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1st each year for the upcoming school year. The FAFSA allows students to apply for Grants, Work Study, and Loans.   Note: Apply for your federal pin number at www.pin.ed.gov. You may also download a FAFSA "worksheet" to assist you in completing the application from the FAFSA.ed.gov web site.

If interested in a student loan and/or work-study be sure to check these boxes on the FAFSA. These responses will allow you to be considered for both work and loans.

Be sure to enter MUW’s Federal School Code --002422
  on the FAFSA.

C.  If interested in a Parent PLUS Loan the parent borrower must complete a PLUS Loan Pre-approval application with the lender of your choice OR complete the PLUS application at http://www.muw.edu/finaid/forms.

Reminder: FAFSA  verification information : The Department of Education randomly selects about 33% of all applicants to supply documentation to "verify" the data submitted on the FAFSA. If you are selected, our office will notify you of the documentation needed. Save your tax returns and the FAFSA Worksheet s-- A, B, and C for possible use if verified.

D. If you plan to apply for State Grants and Scholarships ---Mississippi Residents Only you must go to www.ihl.state.ms.us to apply on-line.  File the online application as soon as possible after January 1st each year for the coming school year.

Federal student aid applicants will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) as a result of filing the FAFSA. (Students who file the FAFSA over the web will receive an email message from the Federal Processor directing them to their SAR online.) Review the information on the SAR for accuracy and to be sure Mississippi University for Women is listed as a college to receive your FAFSA results.  You can call the FAFSA center at 1-800-433-3243 to add our school code-002422 or if you have any questions.

Application status updates for federal student aid and private alternative loan applicants can be viewed online by logging into Banner web with your MUW ID and Password.  In addition, alternative loan applicants can view their loan information at https://www.elmproduction.com/ELMBORRC/prepareLogin.do

Step 3: Award Notification/Loan Processes

Currently enrolled students or new students who have been issued an official MUW BANNER Password will receive an electronic notification that will direct them to Banner web. By using the Password students can then accept or decline awards.

Students who have not yet been issued an official MUW BANNER Password will receive a paper Award Notification and Supplemental Information Form through the U. S. Postal Service. This document must be completed and returned to MUW before the award process can be finalized.
