Making An Appointment
To schedule an appointment at Counseling Services, you may visit the reception area in Reneau Hall #116 or call 329-7127. Appointments are available between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm. The receptionist will arrange for you to meet with the counselor as soon as possible. Because many students use our services, there may be a waiting period before the first appointment can be scheduled. In urgent or crisis situations, however, an immediate or same-day appointment may be necessary. If you are experiencing an emergency, be sure to alert the receptionist to the crisis nature of the situation.
THE FIRST APPOINTMENT
For the initial “intake” session, you should plan to arrive 10 minutes early to complete paperwork. You and your counselor will then begin an assessment of you concerns and decide how Counseling Serivces may be of assistance to you. By the end of the first appointment, the counselor will help you summarize your concerns and explore treatment options for resolving them. If Counseling Services does not provide the level or type of services that you need, we will refer you to another community resource which may better serve your needs. Some students find that the intial interview itself is all they need to explore and clarify their feelings and options, while others may decide to return for additional services.
ADDITIONAL APPOINTMENTS
If it is mutually decided that additional individual sessions are needed, then appointments will be set up on weekly or bi-weekly basis for approximately 50 minutes per session.
Depending upon when you request counseling, the nature of your concern, and what the current demand for counseling is at the center, you may be put on a waiting list for individual counseling after the initial session. We recognize that coming to counseling takes courage and resolve, and waiting can be frustrating when you are doing something important. Please know that Counseling Services is doing its best to accommodate as many students as possible with a minimal wait while maintaining the highest quality of care.
Please Note: there is a session limit for individual counseling and your counselor will discuss this limit with you in your initial appointment.
CANCELLATION AND NO-SHOWS
Counseling Services offers on an appointment basis. Time is reserved in our schedules whenever a student requests services. Canceling or missing appointments leads to an ineffective us of valuable time which could have been afforded to other students in need. If you must miss a session due to illness or emergency, please contact us to cancel the appointment as far in advance as possible. Simply missing an appointment without prior notification counts as one of your available sessions, unless there are justifying circumstances.
