Mississippi University for Women's Department of
Communication has an integrated computer network for
WMUW, the campus radio station, The Spectator, the
campus newspaper, and the television station that
supports the media convergence curriculum.
The Spectator lab utilizes Mac G4 computers, Dell
computers, and a Mac OSX Server to provide industry
standard desktop publishing, web development and
video editing software.
Specialized editing bays
contain workstations specifically designed for
advanced multi-track audio and video editing.
With the equipment, students and faculty of the
department can do just about anything "paperless"
and everything electronically. As long as you are a
student, everything you write, record or edit is on
the server. When you can graduate, you can simply
burn a DVD containing all your work for your
portfolio.
The mutli-media industry
places a premium on graduates who have both
technological expertise and strong superior
communication training. The program's focus is on
writing, editing and creative skills and the
softward and hardware in place enhances students'
learning.
The convergence curriculum was
designed with this technology in mind. The intent to
move into a fully converged product that
incorporates text, still images, moving pictures,
audio and the internet. This allows for a lot of
flexibility in what can be done in the classroom. It
makes the classroom more of a real work experience
for students. |
