Crossroads is a comprehensive
support program targeting a group of students from the
Columbus Municipal School District. The goal of the project is to provide a safe
and enriching environment for students outside of regular
school hours. Students receive small group instruction after
school by highly-qualified teachers and have the option of
using the brand new facilities at the MUW Stark Recreation
Center on Saturdays. In addition to the
programming that takes place during the academic year,
Crossroads offers a four week summer program for
participants. The project addresses the following student
needs: academic remediation and enrichment, leadership and
personal development skills, cultural and artistic
enrichment, health and fitness, and recreation. This effort is being
made possible through a $1 million grant from the
Mississippi Department of Education Office of Innovation and
School Improvement.
The Center for Creative Learning at Mississippi University
for Women is serving as the lead institution for Crossroads,
which will be funded over five years. The strength of this
program lies in the collaborative effort of so many
stakeholders. Each of these organizations has at the heart
of its mission to support the youth of Lowndes County and
Columbus. Crossroads partners include MUW Center for
Creative Learning, MUW Campus Recreation, Columbus Municipal
School District, Columbus
Arts Council, Community Counseling, Lowndes County Detention
Center and the Mississippi School for Mathematics and
Science.
