Columbus, Miss. - Dr. Dickey, professor of Education at Mississippi University for Women, was appointed by the Governor to serve as a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Teacher preparation for Early Literacy.
As a member of the Task Force, Dr. Dickey is requested to make recommendations based on her expertise and knowledge.
Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi issued an executive order creating the Governor’s Task Force on Teacher Preparation for Early Literacy. The Literacy Based Promotion Act requires a greater emphasis on teaching children to read. The Governor has created this Task Force to address recommendations from the 2014-15 Study of Mississippi Teacher Preparation for Early Literacy Instruction and develop an action plan.
The Governor’s Task Force on Teacher Preparation for Early Literacy is composed of representatives from Mississippi’s Institutes of Higher Learning, Mississippi Department of Education, Kindergarten through 3rd grade educators and administrators in Mississippi, 2016 Mississippi University and College graduates, the Barksdale Reading Institute and a staff member of the Governor’s Office.
The Task Force is created to recommend practical mechanisms and timeframes for all personnel involved in preparing teaching, coaching, or supervising K-3 instruction to have a working knowledge of the educational and cognitive science that supports best practice in early literacy instruction.
