Posting your resume on the web

Requirements

1. You must have a valid MUW e-mail account
2. You must have access to a computer with Internet Explorer.
3. We are assuming that your resume has already been typed using a word processor

Before you begin

When your e-mail account is first created by Computing Services, a web directory is automatically created for you. The address to your personal web page is: http://www.muw.edu/~youruserid, where "youruserid" is the first part of your e-mail address. For example, if your e-mail address is "jdoe@MUW.Edu", then your personal web page is located at http://www.muw.edu/~jdoe

The web directory is where you need to publish your resume to in order for the file to be viewed by visitors.

Under your personal account you will find a directory named "public_html". This is your web directory that contains all your web fsile.

This document will show you how to transfer your resume to your web directory that is located on MUW web server.

The person who will be looking at your resume may not have the same word processor that you used to create your resume. They may not have the time to go through the hassle of downloading your resume and trying to convert it to a format that they can read. To prevent difficulties in reading your resume, we strongly advise you to convert your resume to an html format. This way anyone with a standard web browser will be able to read your resume. Almost all the recent word processors that exist today have the capability to convert files into html format. It is a simple as clicking on File, Save As, and then select the file format to be web format (html).

This is an example of saving a document named "myresume.doc" to "myresume.html" using Microsoft Word 2000

Example

Jane Doe has a valid e-mail address on MUW server (jdoe@MUW.Edu).

  • Her web site address is: http://www.muw.edu/~jdoe
  • She processed her resume using Microsoft Word 2000 and saved as "myresume.doc" onto her floppy diskette.
  • She followed the instructions on this page to convert her resume file to "myresume.html" onto her floppy diskette.
  • Now she is ready to transfer "myresume.html" to her web directory.
  • She double-clicks on "My Computer" and then double-clicks on "3½ Floppy (A:)".
  • Now she highlights "myresume.html".
  • She clicks on Edit then she clicks on Copy.
  • She opens Internet Explorer.
  • In the Address box, she types: ftp://jdoe@muw.edu
  • She enters her e-mail password when prompted.
  • Now she is able to view her MUW account files on the server.
  • Jane double-clicks on "public_html".
  • She clicks on Edit and then she clicks on Paste.
  • Now Jane's resume, "myresume.html", has been successfully transferred to her MUW account on the server.
  • She closes Internet Explorer.
  • Now her resume is online at this address:
    http://www.muw.edu/~jdoe/myresume.html
