INTERNS WANTED

Help us grow a farm.  Covered Bridge Produce is a certified organic vegetable farm emphasizing heirloom varieties and greens.  The farm is entering its tenth year and sells its produce through a distinctive subscription service offering 400 shares this season.  We work five acres of good ground on our 18th Century farmstead and another three down the road in Berks County, Pennsylvania.  Besides interns, our crew includes the farmer, his wife (the pack house supervisor and computer guru), our horticulturalist, a field manager, a driver, and an office assistant.  We are seeking intelligent and energetic people who want to try something different to join our team.

Interns will work directly with the farmer, horticulturalist and field manager in all aspects of the operation other than delivery.  The farm’s business model is possibly unique in that our system permits shareholders to order ten specific items each week over the internet.  Shares are as individual as our customers.  Our website has attracted comments from around the world and is worth a visit.  The planning, marketing and growing techniques which make our operation possible are worth learning about.

We seek people sufficiently interested in sustainable agriculture to read, think and
talk with the rest of us to help improve our operation.  We hold regular farm meetings
in which everyone is encouraged to participate.  We are members of the Sustainable Agriculture Internship Training Alliance and encourage our interns to attend weekly educational programs at over a dozen sustainable farms in the area.

Internships of various lengths are available from March into November and offer room, board and a $100 weekly stipend.  Covered Bridge Produce has an extensive library of books and journals about organic agriculture which interns are encouraged to study.  Our internships are as much about learning as working – we hope for a good deal of both.

The Juilliard School

2007 PROFESSIONAL INTERN PROGRAM

Professional Intern Program

The Juilliard School sponsors a Professional Intern Program in both Technical Theater and Arts Administration. The internships are designed to provide hands-on experience working with theater professionals and school administrators in their respective fields.

The program was created in 1977 as the Internship Program in Production for the Performing Arts. Two years later its name was changed to the Juilliard School Stage Department Fellowships, offering fellowships in scenic, lighting and costume design; properties; stage management; production management; publicity; and graphics and photography.

By 1982 the program was no longer just design oriented but focused on all aspects of technical theater. Its name was again changed to the Juilliard School Professional Production Internships, and by the 1991-92 season, two Arts Administration internships were introduced. Currently there are three administrative internships.

The program, which is now called the Professional Intern Program, is in a dynamic state of growth. Many former interns now work at Juilliard as administrators or as theater technicians. There is also a strong Intern Alumni Group which offers support to individuals just entering their chosen careers and to past participants of the program.

The Benefits of the Program
  • All Interns will experience the excitement of participating in or attending professional Drama, Dance, and Music productions.
  • All Interns will live a New York adventure in the premier city of theater production and cultural events.
  • While Technical Interns learn the latest skills and techniques working with trained professionals, Administrative Interns practice the dynamics of operating one of the country's most prestigious performing arts schools.
  • An Intern's performance is monitored and monthly meetings, both group and individual, are held with all Interns to evaluate progress and discuss their experiences to date.
  • Seminars and discussions with alumni are held throughout the year on a variety of relevant topics. Also, parts of the experience are backstage tours of Broadway theaters, the Metropolitan Opera House and other professional theater centers.
  • An internship is a positive way to find out if a job in theater or arts administration holds your interest and is the career you are seeking.
A Brief Description of the Internships

Technical Theater
The Technical Theater Intern's work will revolve around four performance spaces at Juilliard. In past seasons, the Production Department has produced two full stage operas, three opera workshops, five major drama productions (which run again later in spring repertory), five Studio 301 drama workshop productions, a major dance concert, two dance workshops, and numerous concerts, recitals and special events.

Facilities
The Peter Jay Sharp Theater, seating 933 with a 60 foot proscenium stage, houses Juilliard's opera and dance productions, concerts, recitals, and special events.

The Drama Theater, seating 206, contains a large thrust stage which supports productions ranging from classical Greek to modern avant-garde plays as well as lectures, workshops, and spring repertory.

Studio 301, seating 70, is a "black box" space which serves as a performance studio for 3rd year drama productions. Technical support is provided on a smaller scale.

Visit their website for detailed descriptions on each of the internships offered. The number in parentheses is how many internships are available in that particular area.

Technical Theater internships are offered in:

  • Costume Shop (4)

  • Wigs and Makeup (2)

  • Electrics (3)

  • Props (2)

  • Scene Painting (2)

  • Stage Management (6)

  • Production Assistant (2)

Arts Administration internships are offered in:

  • Dance Division (1)
  • Drama Division (1)
  • Concert Office (1)

Things to Consider
The Intern Program is not a degree program. All internships are full time and usually begin in September and run through May. Expect to work 40 hours per week. Although reasonable working hours are generally maintained, the interns' weekly schedules will vary with their duties and the requirements of the overall production schedules. Interns are closely monitored and evaluated in November, before the December holiday break, by the Intern Director and their appropriate supervisors.

Prospective Interns should carefully evaluate their individual financial situations when applying to the program. Although the program offers each intern a stipend of $283 per week, this is not sufficient to cover an individual's living expenses in New York. The internship should be considered a full time work commitment. Therefore, an outside job cannot be relied upon as an income supplement. Housing in New York is expensive and requires careful consideration. It is suggested that housing be secured prior to beginning an internship.

Academic Credit
Those interns seeking academic credit for their participation in the Internship Program must do so through their sponsoring institution. However, The Juilliard School will provide an evaluation of the Intern's work and participation in the program to their sponsoring institution if required.

International Applicants
International applicants can apply to the Juilliard School Professional Intern Program in two ways. Firstly, as an international student presently enrolled in a university in the United Stages who is eligible for a year of practical training after graduation. Secondly, an international applicant can apply through a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa sponsor, thus allowing participation in the program.

Application Procedure
To apply to The Juilliard School Internship Program each candidate must submit the following:

  1. A completed application form. You may download a PDF version of the application form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required). The deadline for filing is June 1 annually. The earlier you apply the greater your chance of getting the internship desired.
  2. A $15.00 non-refundable application fee (check or money order made payable to The Juilliard School).
  3. A current resume including educational experience plus an ID snapshot or photo.
  4. Three letters of reference describing candidate's working style, an evaluation of skills, and, if applicable, an evaluation of design abilities. (Can be sent separately)
  5. A personal statement of at least 250 words describing the candidate's expectations of the Internship Program and how it relates to his or her individual career goals.

Interviews
Interviews are highly recommended. Intern applicants are encouraged to tour the facilities and arrange an interview whenever possible.

New Organizing Institute Internship

NEW ORGANIZING INSTITUTE

The 2004 election ushered in a new era in grassroots organizing-one where conducting an effective online campaign is no longer optional, it is essential to winning. The New Organizing Institute (NOI) was created by the Internet gurus from Lamont, Kerry, Dean, Clark, and Edwards campaigns as well as MoveOn, the DNC, AFL-CIO, and top fundraising and direct marketing experts to teach a new generation of online organizers and Internet campaign directors how to conduct a successful email fundraising campaign, organize volunteers online, outreach to bloggers, coordinate field and online work, and make smart choices about political technology.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

NOI is seeking smart, motivated individuals with a demonstrated interest in leveraging technology to help progressive candidates and organizations conduct winning campaigns for a fall-semester internship in Washington, DC. Interns will assist in carrying out all functions of the organization, for example:

  • Organizing and facilitating trainings; working with partners to plug=in NOI sessions
  • Creating promotional materials for the web, conferences, and email distribution
  • Coordinating a summer "boot camp" training for graduating seniors on tech-enabled progressive organizing
  • Working with the extended NOI-network of alums, trainers, and larger progressive community
  • Promoting the NOI online on blogs, lists, and social networking sites
  • Researching current best-practices in online organizing and conducting interviews
  • Writing training materials and short articles
  • Assisting with the implementation of tech systems, including distance learning tools

The internship pays a $1000/semester stipend. It is also an outstanding opportunity to work with some of the top practitioners in the field during a particularly exciting time in progressive politics, while receiving practical training and experience in online organizing.

Interns may choose to work either a full-time or half-time schedule for a minimum of one semester. Applicants should be attending university at either an undergraduate or graduate level. Applicants will be selected primarily based on their demonstrated commitment to progressive causes and positive recommendations by professors, supervisors, peers, and/or mentors. Experience with computers and technology is strongly preferred. NOI is an equal opportunity affirmative action employer; women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
