Scope of Service:

The School Counselor will be a school based member of a centralized professional service team providing counseling, evaluation, and follow-up. The School Counselor will be responsible for implementing an effective parent involvement program through conducting school conferences, family conferences, home visits, and follow-up. Also, the School Counselor must demonstrate understanding of, and respect for, the unique characteristics of the Choctaw culture.

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordination with the school principal, teachers, and other agencies to identify students needing services.
  2. Serve as a liaison with schools, community leaders, and other applicable programs.
  3. Coordinate activities with the overall school program, including the parent involvement program.
  4. Develop and guide family groups for specific units as deemed necessary through consultation with the Title I Coordinator and other support services.
  5. Evaluate student and family needs as referred to the school counselor.
  6. Provide individual and/or family therapy as deemed necessary and appropriate by the counselor team.
  7. Provide training to staff as directed by the supervisor.
  8. Make referrals to other programs and service providers when appropriate.
  9. Maintain and keep current a case record on each client served.
  10. Participate in the in-service orientation and training of all personnel in applicable areas.
  11. Participate in school staff meetings and staff development.
  12. Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by the School Principal and the Title I Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  1. A valid Educator License issued by the Mississippi State Department of Education with the appropriate endorsement in School Counseling.
  2. Minimum of three years of job experience in school counseling.
  3. Knowledge and experience in individual, group, and family counseling.
  4. Complete a criminal background check on county, state, and national levels. Any record or conviction of criminal or child abuse charges will result in immediate termination.
  5. Employee in this position is subject to random drug testing.
  6. Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License,  adequate transportation, and personal automobile liability insurance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide regularly schedule assistance and modeling of Whole Language and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction in the classroom.
  2. Plan and conduct preservice and inservice training for assigned teachers and bilingual assistants regarding curriculum and ESL topics.
  3. Assist in the preparation of all reports as required by the Principal.
  4. Assist in the planning and implementation, Whole Language teaching strategies, and English as a Second Language strategies with classroom teachers and bilingual assistants in the classroom.
  5. Collect resource materials needed for Whole Language and English as a Second Language implementation.

  8. Administer the Language Assessment Scale (LAS) Test to all students required for bilingual certification.
  9. Check teachers records to monitor student mastery of objectives.
  10. Collect and file copies of the nine-weeks tests from each regular classroom teacher.

Qualifications:

  1. Possess a valid Class AA Administrative License issued by the Mississippi State Department of Education.
  2. M.Ed. with emphasis in curriculum and instruction.

Additional functions will include those of speech/language evaluations and consultation with parents, other service providers, and classroom teachers.   1. Inform faculty and community of speech-language program services.
  2. Provide speech/language therapy to students at the location, and time designated.
