COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women had great success this year at the American Mock Trial Association Jackson Regional tournament in February.
Byrn Bailey, political science and legal studies major from Walls, received the Best Attorney Award at the competition. This is only the second year of existence of The W’s team.
“Bryn developed the skill to anticipate counter-arguments to evidence issues which allowed her to be able to appropriately prepare a rational response,” said the team’s coach, Wesley H. Garret, director of legal studies and assistant professor of legal studies.
The Jackson Regional tournament was a three-day event. The team competed in a round (with each round being a three-hour trial) on Friday evening, two rounds on Saturday and the last on Sunday morning.
The W’s team competed against teams such as Vanderbilt, Rhodes, Tulane, Millsaps, Mississippi College, LSU and Auburn. During competition, The W’s mock trial team beat both Mississippi College and Tulane University’s A team.
“The team won more ballots than the University of North Alabama, Auburn University’s C team, the University of Mobile, Tulane and both Ole Miss teams,” said Garrett.
The team spent more than 147 hours practicing together just since the spring semester started. The figure does not include time members met outside team practices to practice direct and cross examinations with witnesses.
