Founded in 1975, SIFE has grown to become one of the
largest university-based organizations in the world.
SIFE teams are active on more than 800 colleges and
university campuses in over 40 countries and territories
around the world. Working together as a team and
through the mentoring of Sam Walton Fellows, SIFE students
apply their classroom experiences to develop and implement
educational outreach programs that educate individuals in
their communities about the principles of market economics,
success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and
business ethics.
Benefits of
Membership
According to SIFE's Website, "SIFE offers university
students the opportunity to apply what they are learning in
the classroom to solve real world problems. Through the
process of teaching and serving others, they catch a glimpse
of the true scope of their personal potential and are
forever changed. As they go about the process of organizing
their team, developing education projects and competing in a
global competition, they develop teamwork, leadership, and
communication skills far beyond those of the average
university student."
Membership
Criteria
Any person officially
enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at a
college or university, whether full or part-time, is
eligible to participate in SIFE. SIFE is an
interdisciplinary organization housed in the College of
Business that seeks membership from all eligible students,
regardless of the degree which they are obtaining.

The TVA Investment Club was
organized in 2001 and currently manages a portfolio of stocks with a market value of
over $600,000. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
provided the initial funding for the stock acquisitions
within the portfolio.
Club Objectives
The objective of the
TVA Investment Club is to educate its members about
investing in the financial markets. Members in the club research
and evaluate stocks and determine whether to buy, sell, or
hold those stocks in a portfolio.
Competitions
The club competes with
some twenty-five other colleges and universities located
within the TVA service area for the highest level of return.
In 2001 the club won $15,000 for having the highest
returning portfolio, in
2002 the club won $10,000 for a third place finish, and in
2005 the club won $20,000. MUW's TVA Investment Club has consistently outperformed
the overall stock market as measured by the Standard and
Poor’s 500 Index.
Membership
Requirements
The club is open to all
students who are interested in learning about investments.
Club meetings provide training sessions and have
group sessions to evaluate industries and individual stocks.
We have regular meetings every two weeks but also have
weekly meetings to help train our members.
Field Trips

PBL and TVA students visit the Statue of Liberty
|
Members of the club have
traveled to New York and visited the New York Stock Exchange
and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. At the Fed we saw
over $60 billion in gold bars contained in an underground
vault. Club members also visited Memphis and had
discussions with representatives at the Cotton Commodities
Exchange, UBS bank, Coors Brewery, and Memphis Queenlines. Other
educational tours to various industrial plants and
businesses within the region are scheduled throughout the
year.
Guest Speakers
The club also sponsors
speakers each year for all students on the MUW campus.
In October 2005, for example, the club co-sponsored an
economic conference featuring speakers from the Federal
Reserve Bank of St. Louis as well as the Mississippi
Institutions of Higher Learning. We also have outside
speakers come to our monthly meetings to discuss investment
techniques and the latest financial news.
