What is Accounting? Accountants
are the financial gatekeepers of the world. They prepare and
analyze financial reports that furnish current information
for businesses, government agencies, and other
organizations. The accounting profession offers many
employment opportunities in broad areas such as auditing,
financial, tax and management accounting. The field of
accounting offers stimulating and challenging
work that is constantly evolving. Because accounting
professionals spend considerable time analyzing the
operations of a business, accounting is often referred to as
the “language of business.”
This major is designed to provide students with the
necessary background to
be prepared for immediate employment in business or
government; obtaining professional certification by meeting
the requirements to become a Certified Management Accountant
(CMA), a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or with
additional semester hours, a Certified Public Accountant
(CPA); or necessary undergraduate preparation for graduate
study in Accounting or Business Administration.
