Alumni Trips
Mississippi Day in Central Park
For 27
years Mississippians and New Yorkers alike have been
meeting in New York’s Central Park for an event
originally known as the “Way Up North in Mississippi
Picnic.” Begun in 1979, the event reunites native
Mississippians living in New York and current
residents of the Magnolia State. The event also
educates people about the many wonderful assets of
both areas.
This year's event will be sponsored by The New York
Society for the Preservation of Mississippi
Heritage, Central Park, universities, and private
entities. The gathering brings the down-home
southern style of Mississippi to the heart of
Manhattan. “The picnic helps improve the images of
both New York and Mississippi through education and
provides a valuable networking medium for people
from both regions,” says Rachel McPherson, founder
of the event.
The 28th Annual Mississippi Day in Central Park will
be held
on June 2, 2007.
