1.
The minutes from the September 2006 meeting were
approved.
2.
Diversity - Dr. Pat Donat gave a power point
presentation on MUW’s minority numbers in terms of
students, staff, and faculty. For the past six years,
the university has consistently enrolled 30 to 35
percent minorities, giving MUW one of the highest
percentages in the state among the historically white
institutions. The report showed that MUW recruits and
retains through graduation more female minorities than
male minorities. In terms of staff, the university hires
few minorities except in the service, protection and
specialist areas. Also, white employees tend to earn
more. However, years of service likely has affected the
results. Among MUW’s faculty members, the highest
percentage of minorities is in the associate professor
category, and salaries are very similar for whites and
minorities in all faculty categories. Dr. Donat offered
some recommendations. For students, she suggested the
university conduct more analyses, implement recruitment
strategies that target those individuals most likely to
persist and graduate, and implement programs and support
for at-risk students. Her staff recommendations were to
offer more staff development, develop strategies for
recruiting a larger pool of minority candidates, and
examine position classifications, salary statistics, and
years of experience. For faculty, Dr. Donat recommended
strategies be developed to effectively recruit and
retain minority faculty. Dr. Tom Velek pointed out that
there are very few minorities with Ph.D.s in the
humanities areas. Therefore, it is difficult to have
very many in the candidate pools.
3.
Disaster response - Ms. Nora Miller reported that
a system-wide table top exercise will be held soon with
facilities, police and finance representatives from each
institution participating. Following this exercise, MUW
will conduct its own exercises and formalize a plan in
the case of a pandemic. The university’s disaster
preparedness impacts all areas.
4.
Property audit - Ms. Miller said that a state auditor
will be on campus in early December to conduct a 100 %
audit. The university has done extremely well with property
audits in the past. She encouraged all department heads to
complete self audits, which are due tomorrow. The budget
managers are responsible for items within their departments.
Dr. Anne Balazs asked about security for LCD projectors that
are on inventory. Mr. Sam Wise responded that sensors are
being installed.
5.
Banner IDs - Mr. Larry Jones announced that the first
phase of the conversion to generate IDs rather than social
security numbers is complete. The process has gone well with
the exception of a possible problem that has been identified
with the way the numbers were generated sequentially. He
asked that problems be reported immediately. The final phase
of the project is the removal of social security numbers.
Currently, users can log on with either a social security
number or the new number.
6.
VPAA search - Dr. Donat said the first candidate is
scheduled to be on campus this Wednesday and Thursday. The
second candidate will be on campus next week. She encouraged
everyone to attend at least one session.
7.
Financial Aid - Dr. Bucky Wesley reported that Mr.
Frank McClinton has resigned from the position of director
of financial aid and that Ms. Rebecca Vega will serve in the
interim. A national search has begun.
8.
Enrollment Management Task Force - Dr. Wesley said
the Enrollment Management Task Force will meet next week,
and he encouraged all who are members to please attend.
9.
Classes before Thanksgiving - Dr. Tom Richardson said
all night classes will meet on the Tuesday before
Thanksgiving. The staff offices will be closed Wednesday
through Friday.
10.
Benefits meeting - Ms. Melanie Freeman reminded the
group that a Benefits representative will be on campus to
hold two group meetings. Individual appointments will begin
the week of November 13.
