Items from the President’s Cabinet:
Mag Chain - Dr. Bucky Wesley said
the Mag Chain Ceremony will be moved to Homecoming
Weekend to allow more underclassmen and alumni to
participate. His office will increase the promotion of
the event to encourage more participation from the
seniors. The group was reminded that since commencement
is being held on the date of Market Street, both
ceremonies will be held in the morning. This forced the
decision to reschedule Mag Chain.
Residence Halls - Dr. Wesley said
the residence hall plan for the fall includes closing
one residence hall and grouping like groups of students
together. Freshmen men and women will be housed in
Kincannon, but they will be on separate floors with
24-hour controlled access. By grouping like students
together, Community Living will be able to provide
personalized programming that will promote retention.
The closing of a residence hall will save the university
approximately $100,000, which the university will use to
update the residence halls with fresh paint, carpet,
etc. He said he hopes that Fant will be renovated to
house students, particularly learning community
students, and the Community Living offices.
Bulletin - Dr. Gingerich reported
that he contracted with Dr. Jim Keller to proof the
entire document and make the voice consistent. Now the
review process will start among the departments. His
goal is to have it ready by June 1.
MEMA/FEMA - Nora Miller said the
university is trying to get action from FEMA to repair
the inside of the Fine Arts Building. The project has
progressed some since Dr. Limbert spoke to our
congressmen about the situation. The issues are mold
abatement, replacement of interior walls, mechanical,
and the difference between pre- and pose-Katrina costs.
She has also talked with the MEMA/FEMA personnel about
MUW’s costs to clean up the campus following Hurricane
Katrina and to house evacuees.

General updates:
Elizabeth Montgomery noted that the Mock Rock
has been rescheduled to the spring semester because of lack
of participation. The proceeds from the event will benefit
the local Headstart music program.
Anika Perkins had nothing to report.
Ms. Miller said the Pohl and Stark
projects are going well, but there has been a slight problem
with FEMA cash flow. The contractors are now waiting to
start work each day at 7 a.m. instead of 6:30 a.m. because
of requests made by residents in the dorms. She anticipates
these buildings will be complete by December 2006 and can be
moved in by January 2007. The lighting project to increase
voltage is going well. It should be complete by Christmas.
The furnishings for Cochran Hall will start going in next
week, and Martin Hall furnishings will go in the following
week. Computing Services will work on installing computers
for the two buildings. There will be a policy about records
retention. Each office will have guidelines for keeping
records.
Dr. Gingerich reported that a draft of
the Academic Master Plan was distributed to the steering
committee. It will go to the campus in January. He hopes to
have full approval for the document by February. A promotion
and tenure workshop was held this week. The December
Graduates’ Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for Friday,
December 9.
Dr. Wesley mentioned that Scholar’s Day
is tomorrow. Students will interview for scholarships,
including the Centennial Scholarship. The Hurricane Katrina
evacuees’ last day in campus housing is today.
Cheryl Hubbard said the Staff Council
has approved new bylaws. After Dr. Limbert and Perry Sansing
review the document, it will go before the entire staff.
Melanie Freeman noted that the
Director’s Council wants to go to quarterly meetings.
Patsy McDaniel said a book signing for
Southern Grace cookbook is scheduled for December 3 at the
Lowndes County Public Library. Dr. Bridget Pieschel will
speak about the Southern Women’s Institute at the Jackson
Metro Chapter meeting December 10. Also, there will be a
chapter meeting for Cleveland/Bolivar County December 10.
Dr. Bettye Coward, class of 1965 and president of Blue
Mountain College, will speak at the Hall of Master Teachers
luncheon on campus today. The SAAs are delivering hundreds
of exam survival packets to students on campus. Town and
Tower Club will meet December 7 to honor Dr. Joyce Yates and
Becky Thomas with service awards. AAUW will have a silent
auction in Hogarth December 7. The on-line community
training is on schedule. |
