General updates:
Dr. Limbert said she, Perry Sansing,
Mary Margaret Roberts, and Jean Norton spent the week in
Washington, D.C. They met with Senators Cochran and Lott
and Congressmen Wicker and Pickering to make grant
proposals. An alumni event also was held. She said the
trip was very productive. She attended a Decorative Arts
Forum event last night in which MUW was presented a
silver tray for it work on historic preservation,
particularly for Cochran and Martin halls.
Patsy McDaniel reported that alumni
chapter events are scheduled in southwest Georgia and
southeast Alabama; Little Rock, Arkansas; Birmingham,
Alabama; Muscle Shoals, Alabama; and Arizona for the
month of November. Several alumni represented MUW at
presidential inaugurations. Patti Carr Black (`55) has
recently compiled and edited a book titled “Eudora
Welty’s World.” The book was released last month. Toni
Seawright (`87), who was the first African American
winner of the Miss Mississippi Pageant in 1987 and forth
runner up in the Miss American Pageant, was featured in
the Clarion Ledger last month. The now sings, dances,
does stand up comedy and sells real estate in New York
City. The Alumni Office is working with the Public
Affairs Office on the next issue of Visions. The
Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau has asked for
MUW’s ghost tour to be included in their new brochure.
The SAAs sponsor this event at Homecoming.
Dr. Bucky Wesley announced that the new
director of financial aid, Frank McClinton, started
yesterday. MUW’s Office of Financial Aid hosted the state
financial aid group yesterday and today for meetings.
Another W Day is scheduled for November 11. The second
annual chili cookoff is set for November 12. IHL is sending
a representative to conduct a safety check in the dorms on
Monday. Commencement is set for May 6 with two ceremonies at
9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The Class Council met last night to
discuss when to do Mag Chain. They propose doing it prior to
convocation during Homecoming weekend. They hope this new
time might encourage more participation.
Dr. Tom Velek said the Faculty Senate
awarded money to another eight faculty members for
conference travel. He estimates 15 percent of the faculty
are doing conference travel and have been awarded money to
do so.
Mary Margaret Roberts reported that the
Office of Institutional Advancement is getting ready for the
holiday season in which they recognize their donors. The
telefund has raised $80,000 so far this fiscal year.
Elizabeth Montgomery said SGA is
sponsoring a Mock Rock on November 15 to raise money for the
Headstart music program. They may postpone this event to get
more participation. The Bachelor Bid held during Oktoberfest
raised money for the Lowndes County Volunteer Fire
Department.
