Miller, Scott Rawles, Dr. Bucky Wesley, Perry Sansing, Dr.
Mark Bean, Patsy McDaniel, Mary Margaret Roberts, Anika
Perkins, Dr. Lea Helen Evans, and Susan Sobley.
Absent: Dr. Narem Reddy and Dana Vaughn.
Dr. Claudia Limbert called the meeting to order.
The minutes from 8/2/04 were approved.
Dr. Limbert noted that IHL Board member Ed Blakeslee’s visit
to campus went well. He had lunch with several faculty
members and students. Dr. Limbert said her office is
arranging for the other new IHL Board members to visit
campus soon, and she will be visiting the other Board
members. She said the recent dinner at her home with
President Cabinet members, division heads, newly tenured
and/or promoted faculty, and new faculty members was very
nice and gave the new faculty the opportunity to make
connections. As she has said to other groups, Dr. Limbert
urged the Administrative Council members to continue to stay
positive and work together. She said our recent successes
are due to the campus working together.
Items from President’s Cabinet:
1. Enrollment - Dr. Bucky Wesley reported that enrollment
was 2,291 as of the time of the meeting. This is a little
more than an 11 percent increase. Our numbers are up in
almost every category. He thanked everyone for their help
because he said it took everyone working together.
2. United Way - Dr. Sam Gingerich noted that MUW is a
pacesetter this year for the Lowndes County United Way
Campaign which means how much we raise sets the pace for the
rest of the campaign. He said this is a great way to show
MUW’s commitment to the community.
3. W-2009 Planning Meeting - Dr. Mark Bean said the W-2009
long range plan is being developed. A date will need to be
set for the campus community to look at the document and
finalize it. It will be put online. The meeting should be
held in late September or early October.
General Updates:
Nora Miller announced that Computing Services is working on
PC replacement and installing wireless systems in the Center
for Creative Learning. Resources Management would like to
get connected with Banner for making building and vehicle
reservations. The Comptroller’s Office is finalizing
financial statements that will be sent to IHL next week.
There are 138 students confirmed to be using Tuition
Management this year. Student financial aid checks will be
cut next Friday. Work is being completed on the temporary
gym. Final plans for the new recreation center will go
before the IHL Board this month. The second floor of South
Callaway is going in. Renovation work on Martin Hall is
going well. She has an IHL meeting next week regarding the
bond bill. There may be a special session this fall.
Poindexter is top priority. The legislative budget hearings
will be held in three weeks, which will include IHL’s 15
percent salary increase plan over three years.
Dr. Wesley said the Admissions Office is starting over on
the recruitment process and will be using the same strategy.
There will be a W Day in late September, and W Fest will be
held in the spring. The W’s Community Service Program will
kickoff with a Service Fair next week.
Dr. Lea Helen Evans noted that some faculty would like to be
more a part of the process. They understand money is not
available for large raises at the present time, but they
would like to see other means of compensation such as
waiving the gym fee, being able to pay the parking decal fee
over a year, better insurance, tuition waivers for family
members to use at the other Mississippi IHLs, and not having
to use a personal day for the first day of sickness. She
said some of these items and others were in a list given to
Dr. Limbert last year. She also stressed that there needs to
be more communication.
Dr. Limbert responded that communication also is very
important to her. She asked Dr. Evans to get her a copy of
the list so she and the President’s Cabinet can give a
detailed response to each item on the list. She pointed out
that several of the items mentioned are not controlled by
the university, but are controlled by the state or IHL. She
also mentioned that she would like to be an ex-officio
member of the Faculty Senate, a common practice at other
universities.
Dr. Sam Gingerich pointed out that there has been a
significant change in the Provost Office. He would like to
be a spokesperson for the faculty. He sensed during the
search process for the provost position that some faculty
feel apathetic and feel a lack of ownership. He said to
change this is one of his goals this year.
Patsy McDaniel reported that there were five chapter
meetings last month (Lowndes County, Chattanooga, Slidell,
Pine Belt, and New York City), and five chapter meetings are
scheduled for September (Nashville, Oktibbeha County,
Birmingham, Shreveport, and the Los Angeles Mississippi
Picnic). There are six chapter meetings in the planning
stages (Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Mobile, Memphis, Jackson, and
Little Rock). The Inter-Alumni Council met at IHL last week
to discuss plans for the College Fair November 16-17. MUW
will provide alumni to work those days. Also, the Progress +
Project was discussed and a statewide tour of elementary
schools to promote higher education. The Elderhostal group
will attend the Welty Symposium in October. Forty people
have signed up this year with some repeats from last year.
Patti Carr Black, class of 1955, was honored at the
Governor’s Mansion by the State Committee of the National
Museum of Women in the Arts. Megan Pratt was awarded a
Certificate of Achievement in the 2004 Southern Public
Relations Federation. She is the director of marketing and
community relations at First National Bank of Central
Alabama. The Alumni Office is working on deaths, births,
weddings, and classnotes for the fall issue of Visions and
identifying alumni to host prospective student parties this
fall. Alumni representing MUW at university presidential
inaugurations are Dr. Pamela Rowsy at Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. on October 27,
Cathy Randall at Loyola University in New Orleans on
September 26, Emily Waters Norris at Southern Connecticut
State University on October 8, and Dr. Amanda Diaper at
Georgia College and State University on November 12.
Susan Sobley noted that the officer elections have taken
place for Staff Council, and they are setting the 2004-2005
agenda. She also mentioned that some staff are dissatisfied
with the gym fee.
Dr. Limbert said this issue will be taken under
consideration.
Scott Rawles and Mary Margaret Roberts announced that MUW
has been authorized to spend the $750,000 federal grant for
campus security with $250,000 going toward additional
lighting. Other items will include generators for some of
the buildings, including the cafeteria, and training and
equipment for
