4/12/04 Administrative Council Meeting Minutes
In attendance: Dr. Claudia Limbert, Dr. Sheila Adams, Nora Miller, Dr. Bucky Wesley, Perry Sansing, Patsy McDaniel, Mary Margaret Roberts, Anika Perkins, Dr. Barbara Hunt, and Carol Morgan. Absent: Scott Rawles, Dr. Mark Bean, Dr. Narem Reddy, and Cynthia Hembree. Dr. Claudia Limbert called the group to order. She announced that Dr. David Potter’s wife passed away last week from brain cancer. Dr. Potter is the Commissioner of Higher Education. The minutes from 3/25/04 were approved. Discussion ensued regarding the spring 2005 calendar and the number of break days. It was agreed that Dr. Sheila Adams, Nora Miller, and Dr. Bucky Wesley will form a subcommittee of the Administrative Council to make a recommendation to Dr. Limbert concerning this matter. General Updates: Dr. Claudia Limbert reported that the Provost/VPAA search has no close dates and that there is a large pool of applicants. Nora Miller added that the search committee will have a teleconference with the consultant this afternoon to decide which candidates will be invited to the initial interviews in Atlanta. Dr. Limbert distributed an article from the Clarion-Ledger regarding retention rates among the IHLs. Dr. Bucky Wesley noted that MUW lost one fewer student this year than last year and that the freshman class continues to get smaller. However, MUW is in the middle of the IHL institutions with regards to the 6-year graduation rate. Dr. Limbert asked that the members give this information and how our retention rate can be further improved some thought. Dr. Wesley announced that the last Spring W Day is set for April 24. Nora Miller said that three campus meetings have been held concerning the budget process. Computing Services has prepared a network replacement plan and will request exemption to do the work in-house, and they are updating the PC replacement plan. In her construction report, she said employees are being trained on how to use equipment in Parkinson, final design changes are being made for the Fine Arts renovation, the high voltage upgrade would be made next month, and the groundbreaking for the PEAB replacements have been set. She also noted that she will be attending an IHL funding formula meeting this week. Patsy McDaniel said the Gear-Up ad in the Clarion-Ledger Monday featured alumna Kim Jobe, class of 1985 of Corinth. Homecoming begins this week with over 600 pre-registered from 30 states. Winston County Chapter will hold a meeting April 25. Libby Powers Carroll, class of 1974, was named Employee of the Year for Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. She is a medical social worker. Kelly Wilson has been named Director of Community Relations and Continuing Medical Education at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee. Jane McCurdy, class of 1960, and Delia Durst Nackolls, class of 1971, were named Star Teachers. The Jackson Metro Chapter is purchasing a full page ad in the Miss Mississippi program in honor of Miss W Sally Wells. The Faculty Member of the Year nomination forms are out. Dr. Barbara Hunt mentioned that she has had the opportunity to attend recruiting events on behalf of the university. Carol Morgan announced that Staff Council is working on a written proposal for Staff Appreciation Day. Anika Perkins reported that her office continues working on the catalog and an online newsletter and has completed the walking tour brochure. It was suggested that the walking tour brochure be made available online. Dr. Sheila Adams said the academic sections of the catalog are on schedule. She mentioned that she attended an IHL meeting last week concerning articulation agreements. She noted that hours needed for degree completion will be on the IHL Board agenda this month. Perry Sansing said plans for the $750,000 grant for campus security sponsored by Senator Thad Cochran will include additional lighting and emergency call boxes. Mary Margaret Roberts mentioned that Jean Norton in the Office of Institutional Advancement has been doing a great deal of grant work. The most recent grant proposal was with the Getty Foundation for historic preservation work. The annual fund mailer has gone out, and there has been much activity with the class of 1954 for their class scholarship in honor of their 50th class reunion. She reminded the group of the University recreation center groundbreaking set for Friday at 1:15 p.m.
