Dr. Sheila Adams said the spring 2005 academic calendar will be brought before the Administrative Council after the State Department of Education sets the dates for spring break for the public elementary and secondary schools. It is usually scheduled for the week after their testing. She said the Academic Calendar Committee would like to schedule MUW’s spring break for the same week. General Update: Dr. Claudia Limbert reported the campus is well underway with the President’s Initiatives that were announced at the September 2003 faculty/staff meeting, and she encouraged everyone to keep pushing forward. She said the Town & Tower Wingding in Jackson on January 27 went well. There was a good turnout, and she had the opportunity for lots of one-on-one time with many legislators. She said the IHL Legislative Breakfast on January 21 also went well with Governor Barbour and many legislators in attendance. She also noted she had a good seat at Governor Barbour’s inauguration and enjoyed meeting his campaign manager. She announced that she, Perry Sansing, Scott Rawles, and Mary Margaret Roberts will go to Washington, D.C., February 2-5 to meet with MUW’s congressional delegation and present proposals. They did this last year, and it was a very successful trip with two of the university’s four proposals being approved. She said the December Graduates’ Recognition Ceremony was well attended and the participants seemed to appreciate this new event. Scott Rawles also mentioned the Washington, D.C., trip. In addition to meeting with MUW’s congressional delegation, they also will meet with prospective donors. He announced that $3.9 million in gifts and pledges has been raised for FY2004 with five months left in the fiscal year. This compares to $800,000 for FY2000. Dr. Bucky Wesley noted that the Hearin Leadership Conference held January 23 was successful with 95 students signed up and 71 interviewing for scholarships. He said the new Executive Director of Recreational Sports will start February 2. Her office temporarily will be located on the second floor of the Hogarth Student Center. He announced there will be three Spring W Days. The first one is scheduled for February 6. He said his department is planning for a more active Welcome Week. Move In Day is scheduled for August 20. Anika Perkins reminded the members that the Visual Identification Manual is available on the website. She asked that they contact her with any questions. Her office is currently working on the next issue of Visions. Bids were opened January 27. She said the color fact cards are in and available in her office. She also noted the new front campus sign should be installed soon. Dr. Mark Bean said the university is currently in the review process of the university’s overarching goals. The next step is to work on specific objectives. The goal is to have the document in place by fall 2004. He also mentioned the PIE Council is reviewing the student questionnaires. Some questions have been reworded, and some questions have been added. Patsy McDaniel announced that the State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts will meet in Pass Christian on January 29. She is a member of the Board of Directors and will be attending the meeting. She said Susan Ford, a 1974 alumna, and Dr. Mary Evelyn Stringer, an emerita faculty member, will have items on display at the Mississippi Museum of Art for the month of February. These pieces will be part of the museum’s permanent collection. She said IHL has requested that the Inter-Alumni Council partner with them on the Mississippi Scholars project. She will provide more information about this project to the Administrative Council as she receives it. She mentioned that Awards Day is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. in Parkinson Auditorium with a reception following. She also said the Lowndes County alumni chapter will sponsor its annual Valentine fund raiser on February 14 at the home of Russell and Sarah Kyle. Dr. Narem Reddy said his office is currently working on the CIP codes change to the new 2000 CIPs. Dr. Sheila Adams announced that the Mississippi Humanities Council will hold its annual awards banquet in February. Dr. Kendall Dunkelburg will be honored, and a group from MUW will attend. Dr. Limbert added that the Mississippi Philological Association will meet on our campus January 30-31. Dr. Barbara Hunt said the Faculty Senate meets January 30. This is the group’s first meeting since the holidays. Dr. Limbert will meet with the group to give an update. Carol Morgan noted the annual Staff Holiday Luncheon was a success and many toys were donated to the Salvation Army. Nora Miller announced that as of the end of December the university’s revenues were over 47% of the budget and tuition revenues were 49% of the budget. She said she has heard no talk about mid-year appropriation cuts. State sales tax remittances have been short each month, and if this continues through June, there could be a $250,000 deficit in these revenues, but based on the past two years of sales tax collections, this should be made up by the end of the year. She gave an update on construction projects on campus. The contractors have asked for a 2-week extension on the PEAB debris removal due to a mechanical problem and the landfill being full. The braces have been installed on South Callaway, and the project is 11% complete. The repairs on Fant Hall are complete, and Peyton is nearly complete. Projects in the planning stages are Poindexter, Fine Arts and the Physical Plant warehouses. She announced that student reimbursement checks will be distributed on January 30 in McDevitt Hall. She said she is working with Jean Norton on a historic preservation component to the Campus Master Plan. Computing Services is upgrading to Banner 6.1, and should have this ready for testing by the second week of February. Dr. Limbert asked members to continue to update her about faculty, staff, and students who are on military leave. She likes sending them notes of encouragement.
