General Update

The IHL College Fair will take place on October 21 & 22, and the next Inter-Alumni Council meeting will be on October 20 in Jackson. The class of ‘47 will be having their mini reunion 10/8 in Louisville. Patsy also gave an update on alumni who had received awards.

Dr. Sheila Adams mentioned visiting Hinds Community College with Dr. Limbert and the Division Heads. They had also visited EMCC to work on increasing student transfers to MUW.
The Welty Symposium starts October 15, and there will also be a Women’s Health Awareness Week on campus at the end of the month. Dr. Adams said that Dr. Jon Fortman and Dr. Mitzi Green will be retiring in December.

Nora Miller gave an update on construction activity on campus. The bid opening for H & K begins tomorrow. She said that the computer replacement on campus is about 80% complete.

Dr. Bucky Wesley gave an update on the progress of the new enrollment plan. He mentioned that we will continue producing a yearbook. His office is currently working on the “Bring a Friend to Class” week. Dr. Wesley asked for suggestions for the name of a group that would be used for security escorts for students in the evening. The “W Watch” was the name that was picked.

Perry Sansing said that every office should have received their copy of the “Emergency Response and Preparedness Plan.” If anyone comes up with any suggestions to improve the plan, please contact Chief Sellers. Tony Gray is in intensive care and in need of medical leave. The legislature now allows state employees to donate leave. You can contact the Human Resource Office for the rules on donating leave.

Dr. Mark Bean remarked that PIE Council will meet on Friday. Subcommittees will be reviewing W2006. President’s Cabinet will meet on 10/31, and will be submitting the W 2006 for campus review.

Dr. Barbara Hunt mentioned that she will be going to a Teacher Education Fair at Hinds Community College on October 21 for transferring students. The Faculty Senate had their first meeting for the year. Jean Norton will come to the next meeting to talk to the Senate about grant writing. Dr. Hunt mentioned that the Senate is researching the school calendar, because MUW’s classes meet more than any other Mississippi college.

Mary Margaret Roberts reported that we are up $1M in gifts and pledges over last year. Welty Weekend will take place next week, and student tickets for the Overby Forum can be picked up in Student Affairs. She also mentioned that Nancy Dorman Hickson of Southern Living will be coming to the Overby Forum.

Scott Rawles said that the Foundation Office is changing the format for giving to improve tracking of both cash and pledged gifts. From the cash stand point, we are up $141,00 from last year. Total support was $985,000. Phonathon began this week, and the first night went well. Progress is being made in bringing in first-time donors and renewing old ones.

Anika Perkins said that Visions is in its final stages. Reva Brown has taken over the IHL reporting for The Clarion Ledger, and she will be on campus Thursday. Stephen Taylor and Anika will be meeting with Division Heads next week about updating web sites. Anika is also working with Sherry Honsinger on a plan for Veteran’s Day.

Carol Morgan said that Staff Council met with area legislators last week, and they said that raises were doubtful for next year. Staff Council members will be donating leave to Tony Gray. Staff Council made some suggestions for Veteran’s day - a day off or a campus luncheon in the cafeteria.

Dr. Limbert said that we would not be able to give the staff a day off on Veteran’s Day as it was a scheduled class day. She also said that the President’s Council will continue to pursue pay raises for all employees, with the support of the IHL.

Cynthia Hembree said that the Senate had their first meeting for this school year. Events are being planned, such as Oktoberfest and the fall rummage sale on 11/8.

The meeting adjourned at 9:15 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Rose Mary Dill
