09/24/03 Administrative Council Meeting Minutes In attendance: Dr. Sheila Adams, Dr. Bucky Wesley, Perry Sansing, Mary Margaret Roberts, Patsy McDaniel, Anika Perkins, Scott Rawles, Dr. Narem Reddy, Carol Morgan, Absent: Dr. Claudia Limbert, Dr. Mark Bean, Dr. Barbara Hunt, Nora Miller, and Cynthia Hembree The minutes from 9/10/03 were approved as amended. Dr. Sheila Adams said that the council has been asked by Human Resources to suggest 6 members to serve on a 24 member hearing panel pool. She would like each member to suggest 3 men and 3 women by October 2. Please send your suggestions to the President’s Office. General Update: Anika Perkins remarked on the progress of Visions. It should be in the mail by mid-October. She also mentioned that a Girls Leadership Retreat will take place on campus for 7th graders on Oct. 3. Anika gave an update on starting a program for Veteran’s Day. She said that Columbus does not have an annual program. She will contact the local VFW for more information. Patsy McDaniel reported on the achievements of some of our alums. Carolyn Howard Minerich, met with President Bush last week in Jacksonville, AL and was honored as one of the top 17 female small business entrepreneurs in the U. S. Linda Ross Aldy has co-authored a book titled “Druthers.” Nancy Ellis was recently appointed by Governor Ronnie Musgrove to a term with the Mississippi Humanities Council and has been appointed as a faculty member of the new Mississippi School for the Arts. Patsy also said that the class of 1947 was having a mini reunion in Louisville on October 8, and on October 5, there will be a Mississippi Picnic in Griffin Park in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Bucky Wesley announced his area is working on some new recruitment publications. He has received the report back from the Carnegie group and is also currently working on a complete enrollment plan. Intramural flag football is going well, and the rugby team has a game on Saturday. Perry Sansing mentioned that the Administrative Policies Review Committee needs to meet soon to go over some policies. Scott Rawles said the Development Office has submitted $3.65M in grants since 1/3. $622,000 have already been approved for funding. Total giving for the year is up 50%. We have been getting generous support for the annual fund. Stephen Taylor has been hired as the new webmaster. He will be housed in Public Affairs and will report to Scott. Dr. Mark Bean asked that a web page for Institutional Effectiveness be created. Scott said Admissions and Institutional Effectiveness would be a priority for the new webmaster. Mary Margaret Roberts remarked that the FY03 audit for the Foundation was under way. Andrea Holcombe is working on a planned giving mailer. The annual fund is 2/3 of the way to meeting their challenge. Nikki Spear will be doing a phonathon next month. The Foundation will be visiting local businesses to give them a W umbrella and information on The W. Mary Margaret gave an update on Welty Weekend. There will be 150 student tickets reserved for the Overby Forum. The free student tickets can be picked up by students from Judy Moore in Student Services. Dr. Sheila Adams said that each division has been filling vacant needed positions. Jay Pacelli will be leaving in the middle of October for a new position. On Oct 2, she and Dr. Limbert, along with a faculty member from each division, will visit Hinds Community College and meet with their representatives on articulation of Hinds students. MSMS is working on internships with The W for some of their students. Carol Morgan said that the next Staff Council meeting would be on Oct 2 with three area representatives. The meeting would only be open to Staff Council members. Dr. Narem Reddy said that Directors Council met and made a few suggestions for the university mission, values, and statement.
